Recognizing a need for a client-centered approach to investing and life planning, Jennifer Lane founded Compass Planning Associates in 1998. "I had worked in the insurance industry, and clients often asked questions about money and finances that went beyond insurance. I decided to start my own practice to help people better understand, simplify and manage their own finances without getting lost in the big-brokerage maze, and without being charged exorbitant fees."
Jennifer created a fee-only financial consulting firm whose mission places clients' interests at the forefront and steers clear of conflicts of interest that can be part of traditional broker- and sales-based advisor relationships. Over the years, she has expanded the Compass Planning team to include dedicated professionals who share her vision for fee-only, client-centered financial planning services.
In addition to managing Compass Planning's offices in Boston and Newton, Jennifer is increasingly in demand for public appearances. She has entertained, informed, and educated gatherings ranging from networking groups and public workshops to Chamber of Commerce events. She has presented at colleges and universities including Harvard, Tufts and Wheaton, prepping students for their post-graduate financial challenges. She has also been contracted by corporations and human resources consulting firms to educate employees about financial planning issues.
Jennifer is the featured personal finance expert on the New England Cable News' weekly "Ask Jennifer" segment and on “Business Day” and "News Day Live." She was a regular guest on the network's "Wired" program and was a co-host of the weekly finance radio program "Financially Speaking" on the nationwide Money Matters Radio Network for four years. She has appeared on Boston's Fox 25 News, WGBH TV's "Greater Boston with Emily Rooney", and on CNBC's "On the Money" with Carmen Wong Ulrich as an expert on personal finance.
Jennifer's awards, honors and community service include being named among the Top 10 Investment Advisors in the Boston Herald's "Women's Business" reader's choice awards in 2007. She was named the U.S. Small Business Administration's Women in Business Advocate for Massachusetts in 2003. She was honored by the Worcester Business Journal and Junior Achievement of Central Massachusetts by being named to their "Forty Under 40" list of successful young executives. Jennifer served from 2002-2004 as president of New England Women Business Owners, a business-networking group created to promote women's business.
As a former pilot and flight-training executive, Jennifer brings a diverse experience base to the financial planning process. She is author of the acclaimed The Everything Get Rich Book: Surefire Techniques to Increase Your Wealth (Adams Media, 2002), and The Everything Guide to Personal Finance in Your 40s and 50s Book. Her most recent work, The Complete Idiots Guide to Protecting your 401(k) and IRA will be published in March 2009.
Jennifer lives in Boston's historic North End and is an annual supporter of NorthEnd Against Drugs’ student scholarship program and The North End Music and Performing Arts Center (NEMPAC).
